Sage and the kids passed through the Sphynx's arcrhway after writing equations from word problems.


The hallway behind the sphinx's archway doesn't stay a hallway for long. It opens all at once into a room so big the ceiling disappears into shadow, and the floor — every inch of it — is a coordinate grid, axis lines etched deep into the stone and glowing faint gold, crossing at a point dead center of the room. Something about this room feels close to the middle of everything. Close to wherever this world's edges actually are. Maybe close to a way out.


No voice explains the rules here. The room does. The first careless step toward an unchecked point sends everything wrong all at once — the wall ahead stops being a wall. It ripples like a mirage, the way heat does over summer asphalt, and lets Sage walk straight through into nothing before landing right back at the start, paws skidding on stone that was solid a second ago. The wall only turns solid for the right point. Get there, and it opens. Get it wrong, and the room simply declines to notice.


Reading a Point: Which Number Tells You What

Before trying the grid for real, it's worth being sure what a point on it actually means. A point like (3, 5) stacks two directions together: the first number, 3, says how far to walk sideways from the center — right if it's positive, left if it's negative. The second number, 5, says how far to climb from there — or drop, if it's negative. Order matters. (3, 5) and (5, 3) land in completely different places, and this room does not forgive the difference.


Most points here don't just appear, though. They come from a rule — an equation connecting x and y. Here's the rule worked out for x = −2, and then again for x = 0:



Two points down, and the shape of the path is already showing — a straight, climbing line, exactly the kind this room seems to expect.


The room wants a lot of points, so Sage settles into a rhythm on a new rule, y = 2x − 5 — first for x = −1, then for x = −3:



The rhythm holds for the first point. But the second time through, the −5 gets grouped in with x again — the same slip from the sphinx's riddle, pulling something into parentheses that was never supposed to be there. The wall ripples right on cue. A couple of the kids, standing closer than they've ever stood, wince at the sound of it, like they've watched this exact stumble before and already know how it ends if it isn't caught.


Fixed, the point holds, and the wall resolves back into stone solid enough to stand on.


One point stands between here and the center of the grid — and this time, nobody's offering to check it first. The rule is y = 3x + 4. Find y when x = −2:



The point lands true, and for the first time, the ground doesn't just hold — it lights, gold tracing a straight path all the way in toward the center.


That's where the clock is.


It isn't ticking. Both hands are stopped dead at 8:55, glass cracked clean across the face, like something hit it once and never again. Standing beside it — close enough to touch, not touching it — is the shadowy figure, smaller and more solid-looking than ever before, rocking slightly on his heels the way someone does right outside a door they can't make themselves open.


A cluster of kids has gathered at the grid's edge, quiet, not managing anything between each other anymore — just watching, like they already know what's coming and are waiting for the rest of the room to catch up.


Past all of it, the mountain range that's looked like a heart-rate monitor since the very first glimpse of it is close enough now to make out every spike.


And it clicks — all at once, the way a table finally resolves into a line once enough of it is plotted. The frozen clock. The rocking figure. The jagged mountains that have shadowed every room since the first one. Right before the hole in the fence, right before the fall, Sage's best friend had been somewhere close by — a hallway, a bathroom, never quite pinned down — locked in a full, silent panic over a math test five minutes off. 8:55. This place was never just strange. It's what fear does to logic when logic gets thrown out whole: every rule bent, every straight line refused, until something as ordinary as where does this point go has to work a hundred times harder than it should — because all the sense that got rejected somewhere else had to land somewhere.


Nothing about the room changes. Sage does.
