Hispanic Heritage Month has been recognized and celebrated in the U.S. annually from September 15 to October 15 since 1988. At together.science, we’re committed to STEM learning for young people from all backgrounds and abilities. And just because this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration has already wrapped up, it doesn't mean you can’t still get your fill of movies that both celebrate Hispanic heritage and inspire young people to engage in and excel in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Most recently released, A Million Miles Away, tells the story of a Latino migrant farm worker who, through hard work and preparation, became a NASA astronaut. It’s filled with poignant and touching aspects of family and perseverance, and provides viewers with the steps needed to achieve success. You can learn more about the real man behind the movie here.
Back in 2015, the movie Spare Parts came out, which tells the story of four Latino high school students who, with no experience and few resources, form a robotics club. In addition to getting a peak into the exciting world of underwater robotics competitions, the film also touches on issues of equity in education and the experiences of undocumented youth. You can check out a little more about the true story here.
And going back into the movie vault, is the 1988 classic Stand and Deliver. The film features a Latino teacher who works in an underserved high school in Los Angeles. His love for math and his students causes him to work diligently to help them learn and sit for a standardized calculus exam. The story shows how a combination of high expectations and high support can help all students succeed. Read about the man behind the move here.
